NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — Tennessee’s annual sales tax holiday will return at the end of July, giving shoppers an opportunity to purchase a variety of back-to-school items without paying state sales tax.
According to the Tennessee Department of Revenue, the tax-free holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 31 and continues through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2.
During the three-day event, qualifying clothing, school supplies and computers can be purchased tax-free, including eligible online purchases.
State officials remind shoppers that purchases must be made for personal use and not for business or trade purposes. Certain restrictions and price limits also apply.
What Qualifies for the Tax Holiday?
Clothing
Tax-free clothing items include general apparel costing less than $100 per item, such as:
- Shirts
- Pants
- Socks
- Shoes
- Dresses
Items that do not qualify include:
- Clothing costing more than $100 per item
- Jewelry
- Handbags
- Sports and recreational equipment
School Supplies
School supplies priced at less than $100 per item are eligible, including:
- Backpacks
- Notebooks
- Pencils
- Pens
- Art supplies
School supplies costing more than $100 per item are not eligible for the exemption.
Computers
Computers and related devices priced at less than $1,500 qualify, including:
- Laptops
- Desktop computers
- Tablets
Items that do not qualify include:
- Flash drives and storage media
- Printer supplies
- Household appliances
The annual sales tax holiday is one of Tennessee’s most popular shopping weekends, offering savings for families preparing for the upcoming school year.
