KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – Knox County leaders are pressing pause on new data center development, approving a one-year moratorium in a unanimous 10-0 vote.
Commissioner Courtney Durrett recused herself from the decision due to her position with Xfinity.
County officials say the pause will allow time to study the potential impacts data centers could have on infrastructure, utilities, and surrounding neighborhoods. Commissioner Andy Fox emphasized the need for a closer look at how large-scale facilities could affect the community.
“With the moratorium in place we can learn more together,” Fox said. He added that data centers place significant demands on energy and water resources.
The move aligns with similar calls from Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon, who has urged a temporary halt to development while the Knoxville-Knox County Planning Commission works to update zoning regulations.
Several residents voiced support for the delay during the meeting, raising concerns about long-term growth and strain on resources.
Knoxville Utilities Board officials say there are currently three data centers in the area, though they use significantly less power than larger facilities nationwide. They added that TVA has begun discussions on ensuring future data centers contribute fairly to energy costs.
The moratorium takes effect immediately and will remain in place through June 30, 2027. Officials say it could be extended or lifted early depending on when new regulations are finalized.
