SHARPS CHAPEL, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — Human remains discovered earlier this month in Union County have been identified as a man who had been missing for more than a year.
According to Union County Sheriff-elect Rick Carter, the remains recovered on August 10 in the Sharps Chapel area have been positively identified as 38-year-old William Harrell.
Investigators found approximately 50 to 60 bones, including a human skull, several rib bones and two leg bones, down a steep embankment in Sharps Chapel.
The remains were collected and transported to the Knox County Regional Forensic Center, where forensic experts confirmed the identity of the deceased as Harrell.
Authorities said Harrell was last seen in June 2025.
Carter said Harrell’s family has been notified of the identification. He also expressed condolences on behalf of the sheriff’s office.
“The sheriff’s office offers its thoughts and prayers to his family,” Carter said.
Officials have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding Harrell’s death. The investigation remains ongoing.
