Knoxville, TN (WOKI) – A fire inside a West Knoxville apartment was quickly extinguished Wednesday thanks to the building’s automatic sprinkler and fire alarm systems, preventing what officials say could have become a much more dangerous incident.
The Knoxville Fire Department responded to a fire alarm activation at Walker’s Crossing Apartments at approximately 1:32 p.m. on August 19. When crews arrived, they discovered that a single sprinkler head had already activated and successfully extinguished a fire inside one of the apartments before firefighters reached the scene.
According to fire officials, neither residents nor neighbors had discovered the fire before the building’s fire protection systems responded.
Investigators later determined the fire was electrical in nature and began in a bedroom. Because the sprinkler system activated so quickly, the fire was contained to a single corner of the room, significantly reducing fire, smoke, and heat damage throughout the apartment.
No one was inside the apartment when the fire started, and no injuries were reported.
Several pets were also inside the residence at the time of the fire. Fire officials say all of the animals were unharmed.
The Knoxville Fire Department highlighted the incident as an example of how fire alarms and automatic sprinkler systems work together to protect lives and property. The fire alarm system immediately alerted dispatchers, allowing firefighters to respond quickly, while the sprinkler system controlled and extinguished the fire before it had an opportunity to grow.
Officials noted that without those safety systems, the fire could have gone undetected for a much longer period, potentially threatening residents, neighboring apartments, and responding firefighters.
The Knoxville Fire Department is reminding residents to routinely test smoke alarms and support the installation and maintenance of automatic fire sprinkler systems whenever possible.
