KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — Greyhound has announced plans for a new dedicated bus terminal in East Knoxville, a move aimed at improving travel conditions for passengers and replacing the company’s current stop, which has drawn criticism for its lack of basic amenities.
A Greyhound spokesperson said the company has signed a lease at East Towne and is moving forward with plans to develop a permanent intercity bus terminal for Knoxville.
“Signing this East Towne lease reflects our long-term investment in the market,” the spokesperson said.
According to the company, the project remains in its early stages, with permitting and site improvements now underway. Greyhound is targeting an opening in early 2027.
Until construction and preparation of the new terminal are complete, the company will continue operating from its current location in the Plantation Hills area.
Greyhound officials said the new facility is expected to provide customers with a dedicated passenger terminal while improving the overall travel experience and supporting future service growth.
“The new facility will provide customers with a dedicated intercity bus terminal, improve the travel experience, and support future service enhancements and regional connectivity,” the company said.
The current Knoxville bus stop has been the subject of complaints from travelers and community members for several years. Passengers have criticized the location for lacking indoor waiting areas, seating, restroom access, and protection from the weather.
Those waiting for buses have often been forced to stand on sidewalks or sit on curbs, sometimes late into the evening while awaiting departures and arrivals.
Greyhound has faced previous challenges in finding a permanent Knoxville location. The company explored alternative sites over the years, including relocation efforts that resulted in regulatory issues and a Notice of Violation in 2022 before ultimately establishing its current stop on Kirkwood Road.
The announcement marks the latest effort to establish a more traditional bus terminal in Knoxville, providing amenities and infrastructure commonly found at larger intercity transportation hubs.
Greyhound has not announced a specific opening date but says it expects the terminal to begin serving passengers in early 2027.
