NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI) — Tennessee drivers are getting some relief at the pump just in time for Independence Day travel.
According to AAA, the state’s average price for a gallon of regular gas has dropped 12 cents over the past week, bringing the current average to $3.38. That’s 64 cents less than a month ago, though still about 60 cents higher than this time last year.
AAA spokesperson Megan Cooper says the steady decline is welcome news for holiday travelers.
“We’re continuing to see consistent declines at the pump, which comes at the perfect time for those planning a holiday road trip,” Cooper said.
AAA projects about 1.47 million Tennesseans will travel by car during the July Fourth holiday period, nearly matching last year’s numbers. Officials say roughly 91% of travelers in the state are expected to drive.
Despite the recent drop, this year’s Independence Day gas prices are projected to be the highest in four years. Drivers paid an average of $2.75 per gallon on July 4, 2025, compared to today’s $3.38 average. However, prices remain well below 2022 levels, when gas topped $4.40 per gallon.
In Knoxville, the current average sits around $3.32 per gallon, slightly below the statewide average.
AAA says falling crude oil prices and lower demand have helped bring prices down in recent weeks, though demand could rise again as millions of Americans travel for the holiday weekend.
