Knox County, TN (WOKI) – Local leaders are sounding the alarm about a highly potent opioid recently identified in Knoxville that may be contributing to a growing number of overdose deaths.
Knox County Regional Forensic Center Director Chris Thomas and Metro Drug Coalition representative Brandon Styles shared concerns during a presentation with the Knoxville Leadership Foundation this week.
Officials say the drug, called cychlorphine, appeared in the area last year and is believed to be tied to more than 50 suspected overdose deaths. It is significantly more powerful than fentanyl, which is already considered one of the strongest opioids commonly encountered.
Thomas said the Knox County Forensic Center has worked to bring attention to the drug both locally and nationally, emphasizing that while Knoxville may not be a hotspot for the drug itself, it is a leader in identifying and tracking its presence.
Leaders say collaboration and data sharing between agencies is critical in addressing the opioid crisis. Styles emphasized that improved communication among organizations can help prevent further deaths.
The Knoxville Leadership Foundation hosted the discussion as part of its mission to connect community partners and support solutions to critical issues facing the region.
Officials stress that public awareness and continued coordination among agencies will play a key role in combating the threat of emerging synthetic opioids.
