KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — Knoxville Police and the Knox County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the death of a 23-year-old mother following a medical emergency outside Southbound Knoxville, as her family publicly seeks answers about her final moments.
According to the Knoxville Police Department, officers were flagged down around 2:20 a.m. on Sept. 4 regarding an unconscious woman inside the nightclub on South Central Street.
As officers entered the venue, staff members reportedly brought Kenya Burrough, 23, outside. Police said Burrough was unresponsive and experiencing difficulty breathing when officers encountered her.
Emergency medical assistance was requested, and personnel from the Knoxville Fire Department and AMR responded to the scene. Burrough was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police were informed the following day that Burrough had died at the hospital.
An autopsy is pending through the Knox County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine her official cause of death. Detectives with the Knoxville Police Department’s Investigations Bureau continue to review the incident.
Father Appeals for Witnesses
Kenya’s father, Keith Burrough Jr., a Knoxville photographer and content creator, has issued an emotional public appeal asking anyone who was at Southbound Knoxville that night to provide information, photographs, or video that could help explain what happened.
In a social media post, Burrough described his daughter as a loving mother whose young daughter is now growing up without her.
According to his account, Kenya had been out with friends at Southbound Knoxville when she began coughing and having difficulty breathing. Friends reportedly told family members that she informed them she was experiencing asthma-related breathing problems and repeatedly used her inhaler in an attempt to relieve her symptoms.
Despite those efforts, her condition reportedly continued to worsen.
Burrough said friends told him Kenya needed assistance walking and eventually could no longer stand on her own. Friends allegedly alerted club security and informed them that Kenya suffered from severe asthma and appeared to be having an asthma attack.
According to the family’s account, a security guard carried Kenya outside the club as her condition deteriorated.
Questions About Critical Moments Before EMS Arrival
Burrough said friends continued informing security personnel and responding officers that Kenya was experiencing serious breathing difficulties linked to asthma.
In his statement, he noted there are conflicting accounts regarding the actions taken before emergency medical personnel arrived.
The family said they were informed that officers checked Kenya’s pulse and monitored her breathing while waiting for EMS. However, friends who were present told the family they did not observe those assessments being performed.
The father said those unanswered questions have become central to the family’s search for clarity.
“What happened during those critical moments? Who saw what? What was done? What wasn’t done? And could something have been done differently that might have changed the outcome?” Burrough wrote.
He emphasized that the family is not seeking rumors or speculation but is instead asking those with firsthand knowledge to come forward.
Investigation Ongoing
The Knoxville Police Department has confirmed that detectives remain actively involved in the investigation while medical examiners work to determine the cause of death.
The family is asking anyone who was at Southbound Knoxville during the early morning hours of Sept. 4, witnessed Kenya experiencing breathing difficulties, or recorded photos or video of the incident to contact them.
They are particularly interested in accounts involving interactions between Kenya, security personnel, police officers, and emergency responders before she was transported to the hospital.
Burrough said the family believes those details may help them understand what happened during the final minutes before their daughter’s death.
As the investigation continues, family members say they remain focused on finding answers and honoring the memory of a young mother whose life ended unexpectedly.
