Unicoi County, TN (WOKI) – Tennessee is rolling out a fresh new look at its borders, as Governor Bill Lee unveiled the first of the state’s redesigned “Welcome to Tennessee” signs.
The new signage debuted at the I-26 Welcome Center in Unicoi County, marking the start of a statewide effort to update the visual experience along major highway entry points. The initiative is backed by a $5 million investment included in the state’s FY25 budget.
State leaders say the updated signs are designed to create a stronger first impression for the millions of travelers entering Tennessee each year. The design is inspired by vintage postcard artwork and features bold, colorful imagery highlighting the state’s natural landscapes, including mountains, rivers, and wildlife.
Governor Lee said the new signs reflect Tennessee pride and the welcoming spirit of the state. Officials also note the redesign is the first major update to Tennessee’s welcome signage since 1995.
Transportation leaders say the signs are not only visually appealing, but also practical. The new modular design allows for easier maintenance and replacement, while creating a consistent look at Welcome Centers across the state.
The unveiling in Erwin represents the first phase of the project. TDOT plans to install similar roadside gateway signs at 16 interstate entry points over the coming months.
Tourism officials say the enhanced signage is meant to encourage visitors to explore more communities and support local businesses across the state.
