Hate Crime report

Wednesday on Howell & Yarbrough, we tackled the topic of hate crimes in Tennessee.

A TBI report shows reported hate crimes increased 48% in TN from 2014 to 2015. Some of the numbers are surprising. There were 80 crimes reportedly motivated by anti-African American bias, 43 anti-white bias, 17 anti-Hispanic bias, 10 anti-Jewish bias, 35 anti-homosexual bias, 26 anti-disability bias. Some people say Tennesseans are backwards bigots. Are you proud to be a Tennessean?

Here is the report

Also, we called a random Swede on Howell & Yarbrough last week. It’s part of a tourism initiative. However, the story about the heroes who intervened in the Stanford rape case may do more to ingratiate us with Sweden as the hero bicyclists are Swedes. Here is the story

Some of Catherine’s other favorite stories:

*A new element is named Tennessine in honor of those who discovered it at Oak Ridge National Lab. Here is the link
Dollar General kidnapping attempt

8Mother of the year goes to…. No, this isn’t facetious; This mother really does deserve credit for her quick action when a man brazenly tries to abduct her 13-year-old daughter in a Dollar General store. Here is the link to the video.

*The show Nashville may not be dead after all. CMT may pick up the series for a fifth season. Here is the link.

*The co-owner of the French Market Creperie downtown says the building’s owner is trying to force them out for a Starbucks. The building owner says it isn’t true. However, there are plans for a Starbucks within the same building. Here is a link to the story. I really hope that we don’t get in the habit of pushing local, authentic businesses out in favor of giant chains, especially on our beloved Gay Street
