NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – The effort to honor Dolly Parton with a name change at Nashville International Airport took a major step forward Friday after the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority unanimously approved a resolution supporting the process.
In a 6-0 vote, the board agreed to begin the process of modifying the airport’s name to recognize Parton’s legacy and impact on Tennessee. Airport officials emphasized that a final name has not yet been selected and that discussions will continue regarding exactly how her name will be incorporated.
No Immediate Name Change
While Friday’s vote represents a significant milestone, officials said travelers should not expect immediate changes.
The resolution is considered a statement of support rather than a final renaming action. Airport leaders will now begin a broader review process that includes policy considerations, public input and coordination with Parton’s family and representatives.
Airport officials indicated they expect to provide additional details in the coming months.
Strong Support Across Tennessee
The proposal has attracted widespread support from state and local leaders.
Gov. Bill Lee announced support for the effort following Parton’s death, calling her life and legacy an integral part of Tennessee’s identity.
Mayor Freddie O’Connell has also endorsed the proposal, noting Parton’s longstanding contributions to Nashville and her plans for the proposed SongTeller hotel and museum project.
The Metro Nashville Council recently passed a resolution backing the renaming effort as well.
Petition Draws More Than 175,000 Signatures
Supporters have helped build momentum through a public petition advocating for the airport name change.
The petition, which was initially launched before Parton’s death, gained additional support afterward and has now gathered more than 175,000 signatures.
Petition organizers say Parton represents the best of Tennessee and is a fitting figure to greet visitors arriving in the state.
Policy Questions Still Ahead
One challenge facing airport officials is an existing authority policy stating that airport facilities generally should only be named after individuals who have been deceased for at least two years.
Because Parton’s passing occurred recently, the board may need to revisit or amend that policy before a final renaming can occur.
Officials say those discussions will be part of the next phase of the process.
A Tennessee Icon
For decades, Dolly Parton served as one of Tennessee’s most recognizable ambassadors through her music, philanthropy, business ventures and support for education initiatives.
Supporters argue that naming the state’s busiest airport in her honor would provide a lasting tribute to a woman whose influence extended far beyond the entertainment industry.
The airport authority says it will continue working with community leaders, elected officials and the Parton family as the proposal moves forward.
