KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – Zoo Knoxville has added two new members to its African lion pride, introducing brothers Sammie and Sika to the community.
The cubs were born on July 14 to parents Zahra and Maji, making them the second and third lion cubs born to the pair this year. Along with their older brother, Bisky, the newest arrivals have already become important additions to the zoo’s conservation efforts.
According to Zoo Knoxville, both cubs are being hand-reared by the animal care team after Zahra experienced challenges producing enough milk to meet their nutritional needs. Zoo officials say Sammie and Sika are healthy, growing well and continuing to thrive under the care of staff.
Animal care experts say Zahra and Maji are also doing well.
African lions are classified as Vulnerable, meaning healthy and genetically diverse zoo populations play an important role in the long-term future of the species.
The cubs’ names each have a special meaning. Sammie was named by a longtime Zoo Knoxville supporter, while Sika was chosen by the animal care staff who have devoted countless hours to caring for the young lions since birth.
As the cubs continue to grow, Zoo Knoxville is exploring options for their future social development. One possibility under consideration is eventually introducing Sammie and Sika to their older brother Bisky so the three young males can grow up together as part of the pride.
Zoo officials emphasized that no final decisions have been made regarding introductions. Any future interactions would be carefully planned and based on the health, safety, behavior and development of all three lions.
For now, visitors and animal lovers are being encouraged to help welcome Sammie and Sika as the newest members of the Zoo Knoxville family.
