NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI) – As law enforcement agencies across Tennessee increase patrols and traffic enforcement efforts, AAA is reminding motorists that the behaviors being targeted are among the leading causes of preventable crashes and traffic deaths.
Operation Safe Driver Week, running July 12 through July 18, focuses on reducing dangerous driving behaviors including speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving and failure to obey traffic laws.
AAA-The Auto Club Group says those priorities mirror the goals of its “Crashes Hit Different” campaign, which encourages drivers to eliminate risky behaviors that contribute to traffic injuries and fatalities.
“Most people don’t expect a crash to happen to them. That’s exactly why risky driving habits become so dangerous,” said Megan Cooper, spokeswoman for AAA-The Auto Club Group. “Operation Safe Driver Week reminds us that speeding, distraction and impairment aren’t just traffic violations; they’re choices that can permanently change lives.”
Focus on High-Risk Behaviors
AAA says driver behavior plays a role in the majority of traffic crashes, making public awareness campaigns and targeted enforcement critical tools for improving road safety.
According to the organization, a person is killed in a traffic crash in the United States approximately every 12 minutes, and crashes cost the nation an estimated $340 billion annually.
AAA’s safety campaign highlights four major behaviors that drivers should avoid:
- Speeding, which increases both crash risk and crash severity.
- Distracted driving, including texting and using mobile devices behind the wheel.
- Impaired driving, involving alcohol, drugs or other impairing substances.
- Failure to wear a seatbelt, which significantly reduces the chances of surviving a serious crash.
Officials say even seemingly minor decisions can have devastating consequences.
“Too many drivers view speeding, texting, or driving impaired as small decisions, but the consequences can be life altering,” Cooper said. “No one expects to be involved in a serious crash. Taking a few simple steps such as slowing down, staying focused, buckling up, and never driving impaired can protect you, your passengers, and everyone sharing the road.”
Increased Travel Brings Added Risk
With summer vacations and seasonal travel resulting in heavier traffic volumes across Tennessee and the nation, AAA is encouraging motorists to use Operation Safe Driver Week as a reminder to practice safe driving habits every time they get behind the wheel.
Law enforcement agencies participating in the campaign are expected to focus enforcement efforts on reckless and dangerous driving behaviors throughout the week.
Officials say the goal is not only to issue citations but also to educate drivers and prevent crashes before they occur.
AAA encourages all motorists to remain alert, obey traffic laws, avoid distractions and make safety a priority during the busy summer travel season.
