SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – The Sevierville Police Department is warning residents to be on alert after receiving reports of scam calls from individuals falsely claiming to be police officers.
According to the department, the scam involves an unidentified caller contacting members of the public and claiming to be a Sevierville police officer investigating an identity theft case. The caller then attempts to obtain personal information from the victim.
Police said the calls are fraudulent and emphasized that legitimate law enforcement officers do not request sensitive personal information over the phone, by email or through text messages.
“We have been made aware of a scam where a person calls and falsely states they are a Sevierville police officer working on an identity theft case and then asking for personal information,” the department said in a public warning.
SPD officials specifically cautioned residents against sharing financial account numbers, passwords, Social Security numbers or other sensitive information with unsolicited callers.
The department advises anyone who receives a call from someone claiming to be an SPD officer and requesting personal information to end the conversation and independently verify the caller’s identity.
Residents can contact the Sevierville Police Department’s official dispatch center directly at 865-453-5506 to confirm whether the call is legitimate.
Police are encouraging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious calls to help prevent others from becoming victims of fraud.
