Knoxville, TN (WOKI) – Drivers in Knox County should prepare for traffic disruptions as construction begins on a new roundabout along Alcoa Highway.
Starting at 9 a.m. Monday, June 1, Woodson Drive and Wye Way will be closed at their intersection with Alcoa Highway as part of a Tennessee Department of Transportation project to improve safety and efficiency in the area. The work is part of broader improvements between Woodson Drive and Cherokee Trail.
Construction crews will install drainage and utilities and build the new roundabout, while also raising the roadway by up to four feet to improve alignment. Because of the depth of the fill and limited roadway space, the intersection must be fully closed during construction.
Traffic will be detoured to Cherokee Trail. Officials say Woodson Drive is expected to reopen in its final configuration on or before Friday, July 31.
Motorists should expect delays and are urged to use caution as crews will be working in the area.
