Erwin, TN (WOKI / WVLT) — A major employer in Unicoi County is preparing to shut its doors.
Tsubaki Nakashima, a Japan-based manufacturer of precision balls and rollers, has announced plans to close its facility in Erwin. The company filed a WARN notice with the state Thursday, confirming that 110 workers will be affected by the closure.
According to the filing, the shutdown will take place in phases between July 31 and December 18.
Company officials say the decision was made as part of its mid-term business plan covering 2025 through 2029. The move is aimed at optimizing global operations and strengthening long-term sustainability.
As part of the restructuring, production of steel balls currently manufactured in Erwin will be transferred to other plants in the United States and India. Roller production will shift to the company’s facility in Bosnia.
In a statement, Tsubaki Nakashima acknowledged the impact the closure will have on employees and the surrounding community.
“We recognize the impact this decision will have on our employees, their families, and the local community,” the company said. “We appreciate their dedication and are committed to supporting them through this transition.”
The company says it will provide transition support programs and resources to help affected workers.
Despite the closure, Tsubaki Nakashima says it remains committed to maintaining service to its customers, with production gradually shifting to its global manufacturing network.
