Knoxville, TN (WOKI) The City of Knoxville has arranged a community meeting, hoping to hear feedback on the city’s proposal to sell a portion of Chilhowee Park to the Emerald Youth Foundation.
City leaders announcing Thursday, September 4 that a meeting previously slated for next week has now been rescheduled to September 15, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., to make it more available to people.
The meeting will be held at the Dr. E.V. Davidson Community Center gymnasium, 3124 Wilson Avenue.
The move comes after members of the Knoxville community pushed back against the city’s, and Mayor Indya Kincannon’s, handling of the sale.
As it stands, the city is preparing to sell 13 acres south of Magnolia Avenue to Emerald Youth. The group has proposed investing $25 million to make the space a community complex similar to the Haslam-Sansom Ministry Complex. It would include sports fields, a learning center and other community resources.
The proposed sale also impacts the future of the Tennessee Valley Fair. For decades, the fair has used Chilhowee Park’s Jacob Building. The fair may need to move to another spot should the sale move forward.
Those interested in learning more about the city’s point of view are being asked to check this website. City representatives said Thursday they plan to populate the page with details about the proposal. As of 1:00 p.m. Thursday, the website sits empty.
