NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) –
Aviation continues to be a major economic engine for Tennessee, generating $53.8 billion in annual economic activity and supporting approximately 236,000 jobs statewide, according to a newly released Aviation Economic Impact Study from the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
The 2026 study examined economic activity linked to Tennessee’s 76 public-use airports as well as off-airport air cargo operations. Using the most recent available data, researchers found aviation contributes nearly $18 billion in annual payroll and accounts for approximately 9% of Tennessee’s Gross Domestic Product.
TDOT Commissioner Will Reid said the state’s aviation system serves as a critical link for businesses, healthcare providers, manufacturers, tourism operators, and communities throughout Tennessee.
“Aviation is a gateway for commerce, competitiveness, and community connectivity in Tennessee,” Reid said. “From advanced manufacturing and healthcare to tourism and small business, airports enable employers to reach markets, attract talent, visitors and serve customers.”
Economic Growth Since 2019
The report shows aviation’s economic footprint has expanded significantly over the last several years. In 2019, Tennessee’s aviation sector generated roughly $40 billion in economic activity. The latest study places that figure at $53.8 billion, reflecting strong growth in airport operations, visitor spending, business travel, and air cargo activity.
According to TDOT officials, the increase highlights aviation’s growing importance to economic development, workforce mobility, and the state’s ability to compete for new investment.
Impact Reaches Beyond Airports
The study measured direct airport employment, tenant businesses, visitor spending by out-of-state travelers, aircraft activity, and air cargo operations.
TDOT Aeronautics Director John-Paul Saalwaechter said airports provide benefits that extend well beyond runways and terminals.
“When a manufacturer selects a site, when a hospital coordinates critical flights, when visitors choose Tennessee for a long weekend, airports make those decisions possible,” Saalwaechter said.
Officials noted that airports provide vital transportation links for rural communities while supporting business recruitment efforts and tourism destinations statewide.
No Fines or Penalties Involved
Unlike regulatory enforcement actions sometimes associated with aviation operations, the Aviation Economic Impact Study does not involve fines, penalties, or compliance issues. Instead, the report serves as an economic analysis measuring the value Tennessee’s aviation infrastructure brings to businesses, workers, and communities.
