CAMPBELL COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI) – The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has temporarily closed a section of Flatwoods Road within the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area following damage caused by recent heavy rainfall and a related off-highway vehicle accident.
According to TWRA, a culvert at the Thirteen Hollow trailhead was washed out, creating a hazardous condition that prompted the road closure while repairs are completed.
The agency also responded Tuesday morning to an accident at the damaged location involving a side-by-side off-highway vehicle. Officials said the operator did not see the washed-out culvert and drove into the affected area.
One occupant of the vehicle suffered injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. TWRA did not release additional information regarding the person’s condition.
Wildlife officials are warning visitors that the washout at Flatwoods Road may not be an isolated issue. Continued rainfall has reportedly damaged portions of trails and roads throughout the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area, creating potentially dangerous conditions for riders and outdoor enthusiasts.
TWRA is urging all off-highway vehicle users to exercise extreme caution when traveling through the area and to remain alert for washed-out roads, trail damage and other hazards.
The agency said the closure of the affected section of Flatwoods Road is necessary to protect public safety and provide crews enough space to complete repairs.
Work is already underway, and officials say the roadway will reopen as soon as conditions allow.
Visitors planning trips to the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area are encouraged to adjust travel plans accordingly. TWRA said all other roads and access points within the management area remain open at this time.
The agency will announce when repairs have been completed and the road has reopened.
