COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI)— The Tennessee Department of Transportation is advising motorists to use alternate routes around portions of State Route 9/U.S. 25/70 in Cocke County following recent storm damage that has significantly impacted traffic flow.
According to TDOT, multiple sections of the roadway have been reduced to a single lane and are currently operating with temporary traffic signals in place to manage traffic through damaged areas.
Transportation officials warn that the lane restrictions create a high likelihood of backups and delays, particularly during weekends when traffic volumes increase.
TDOT said reducing congestion in the area will help crews continue recovery and repair efforts more efficiently and safely.
Alternate Routes Recommended
For local traffic, TDOT recommends the following detour:
- State Route 9 to State Route 107 to State Route 70 into North Carolina via North Carolina State Route 208
- Commercial vehicles are prohibited from using this alternate route.
For commercial truck traffic and other large vehicles, TDOT recommends:
- Interstate 81 North to Interstate 26 East into North Carolina
Officials are encouraging travelers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and check road conditions before heading into the area.
Repair work is ongoing, and TDOT has not yet announced when all affected sections of the highway will be fully reopened.
Motorists should continue to use caution in the work zone and follow all posted traffic control devices.
