NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A new AAA survey shows summer travel remains a priority for many Tennessee residents, even as higher gas prices and inflation impact how trips are planned.
According to the AAA Consumer Pulse™ Survey, about half of Tennesseans say they plan to take a summer vacation this year—nearly unchanged from 2025. However, many are adjusting their travel habits to manage rising costs.
“People still want to take a summer trip. What’s changing is how they make it work,” said Megan Cooper with AAA – The Auto Club Group. “We’re seeing more flexibility, more planning, and a stronger focus on getting value for their budget.”
The survey found several ways travelers are adapting:
- 24% say they plan fewer road trips
- 24% are choosing destinations closer to home
- 24% are budgeting more for fuel and cutting back on extras
- 16% are reconsidering whether to drive or fly
- 28% say gas prices haven’t impacted their plans
Air travel trends are similar, with 38% of respondents reporting no change to their flight plans.
AAA says planning ahead is becoming more critical. Nearly 30% of travelers are choosing destinations with more predictable costs, while another 29% are booking earlier to lock in prices.
Travel agents may also help cut costs by bundling flights, hotels, and transportation. AAA recommends travelers book early, remain flexible, consider closer destinations, and travel during off-peak days to save money.
