Knoxville, TN (WOKI / WVLT) – Knoxville City Council signed off on several major measures during its Tuesday evening meeting, including a nearly $499 million budget for Fiscal Year 2026–27. Despite rising costs, city leaders voted to keep the property tax rate unchanged at $2.1556 per $100 of assessed value, marking the lowest level since 1974.
Public safety remains a central focus, with more than $102 million dedicated to police and fire salaries and benefits. The plan also includes investments in affordable housing, homelessness prevention, and staffing support for Chilhowee Park as its role shifts under Parks and Recreation management. The new fiscal year begins July 1.
In another major vote, council members approved a ban on smoking inside bars and other age-restricted venues, effective January 1, 2027. The ordinance covers cigarettes, cigars and vaping products. Supporters say the move will improve public health and working conditions, while opponents argue it limits business freedoms. Businesses that violate the rule could face fines, though certain establishments like cigar lounges and tobacco shops are exempt.
