KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — The Tennessee Valley Authority is in discussions with local power companies about potential rate changes as electricity demand continues to grow.
According to TVA, rapid increases in power usage—especially from data centers and large industrial operations—are putting added strain on the system. In response, TVA has begun working with the 153 local power companies it serves across seven states to explore updates to its rate structure.
Proposals include more stable pricing options for large manufacturers, a “marginal pricing” model, and possible new customer classes and added capacity charges for high-demand users like AI operations and data centers.
A TVA spokesperson says discussions have been ongoing since February, and any formal proposals will continue to evolve before being presented to the TVA Board in August. The board will make final decisions on any changes.
