Newport Rescue Squad Member Charged with Rape, Employment Status Unclear, TBI and Sheriff Say

Newport, TN (WOKI) A member of the Newport Rescue Squad has been indicted and charged with rape.

Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation say 25-year-old John Shropshire turned himself in Tuesday and was booked into the Cocke County Jail on a $7,500 bond following a grand jury indictment on one count of rape.

According to the TBI, investigators began looking into Shropshire and learned that in November of 2024, he sexually assaulted a woman at her home.

The Cocke County Sheriff’s Office confirming that Shropshire had, at least at one point, been a member of the Newport Rescue Squad. There is no word on whether or not Shropshire was still with the squad. The agency has not commented.
