Knoxville, TN (WOKI) The Salvation Army branches in Knoxville, Maryville and Sevierville are thanking community members and organizations for their support during National Salvation Army Week.

Events are planned through May 18, recognizing and giving back to the people who help make a difference for their neighbors in need.

Maj. Cameron Henderson with the Salvation Army Knoxville Area Command said it’s a busy time around East Tennessee.

“We’re trying to visit other partners to say ‘thank you’ to them all around the area. Maryville [Salvation Army] will be giving away bicycles thanks to Old Ben Franklin Motors,” said Henderson. “And we’ll meet the mayor and and he’ll he’ll join us down there for our free lunch ministry every Friday. So just a whole lot going on, and then just meeting and saying thank you to partners.”

Looking ahead, the Salvation Army Knoxville is working on several initiatives, including addressing homelessness in the city, but Henderson said they can’t do it alone.

“We’re hoping to open what we call a navigation center, navigating all of the systems to find a way to leave behind the streets. To get back into permanent housing and to better employment is so difficult, and so we want to invite all the agencies, all the churches, all the volunteers who say we just want to help,” said Henderson. ”So if someone’s interested in being a part of that, investors, we need a lot of funding to do that, but agencies and churches who want to help – let’s work together and find ways to do it.”
