MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — The Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a growing scam involving fraudulent Walmart orders and individuals posing as delivery representatives to retrieve merchandise from unsuspecting victims.
According to the sheriff’s office, scammers are reportedly gaining access to Walmart customer accounts and placing unauthorized orders. Those purchases are then delivered to the victim’s home while the suspect watches and waits nearby.
Detective Sergeant Trevor Snowden said the scam typically escalates when someone approaches the residence claiming to be from Walmart or a contracted delivery service. The person tells the homeowner the package was delivered to the wrong address and asks for the items to be returned.
“Don’t ever hand over items to someone simply because they claim to be from Walmart,” Snowden said. “If you receive a Walmart delivery you did not order, you should immediately contact the store through their app, store or website and report a fraudulent order.”
Authorities say residents should never provide personal, financial, or account information to anyone claiming to represent Walmart or another organization without independently verifying their identity.
Snowden also stressed that residents should not allow strangers into their homes under any circumstances to retrieve allegedly misdelivered merchandise.
“Do not, for any reason, allow someone into your home to retrieve the fraudulently ordered items,” Snowden said. “If someone tries to gain access to your home or if you feel you are being scammed, immediately contact law enforcement.”
The sheriff’s office recommends that consumers regularly monitor online shopping accounts and financial statements for suspicious activity. Residents are also encouraged to change passwords if they suspect unauthorized access to an account.
Officials say the scam is another example of criminals adapting their tactics to exploit online shopping and delivery services.
“The best way to stay safe is to stay alert,” Snowden said.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted by a scam or has received an unauthorized Walmart delivery is encouraged to report the incident to law enforcement and the retailer immediately.
