KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI) — A late-night fire caused significant damage to a Knoxville business Thursday night, but firefighters were able to quickly bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to additional areas of the structure.
According to fire officials, Knox County Communications District received a call at approximately 11:05 p.m. reporting smoke and flames coming from a commercial building.
When the first fire crews arrived, they encountered visible smoke and fire coming from the structure.
Firefighters initially entered the building to begin suppression efforts before determining that the majority of the active fire was burning on the roof.
Crews deployed a ladder truck and attacked the fire from above, successfully containing the flames before they could spread further across the structure.
Officials said the fire was knocked down and placed under control within 20 minutes of firefighters arriving on scene.
Even after the fire was contained, crews remained at the location conducting extensive checks for hidden hot spots and possible fire extension within walls, ceilings and other portions of the building.
The business was closed when the fire started, and officials confirmed there were no occupants inside at the time of the incident.
No firefighter injuries were reported during the response.
The building sustained heavy smoke and water damage throughout the structure, along with significant fire damage to portions of the roof where the blaze was concentrated.
Knoxville Fire Department investigators remained on scene overnight gathering evidence and working to determine what sparked the fire.
At this time, the cause of the fire has not been released.
