KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI) — The Knoxville Police Department is investigating two separate fatal crashes that occurred within a little more than three hours of each other on Thursday morning, leaving two people dead.

The first crash was reported at approximately 3:15 a.m. on July 23 on Interstate 40 West near Strawberry Plains Pike.

According to KPD, officers responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a Toyota Camry. Investigators determined the vehicle was traveling westbound on I-40 when it left the roadway and crashed into a wooded area for reasons that remain under investigation.

The driver, an adult woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. A male passenger sustained minor injuries and was transported to UT Medical Center for evaluation.

Investigators believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. The identity of the deceased driver is being withheld pending notification of family members.

Just over three hours later, at approximately 6:30 a.m., KPD officers responded to a second fatal crash involving a motorcycle at Western Avenue and Matlock Drive.

The preliminary investigation indicates that an adult male motorcyclist was traveling on Western Avenue when a sedan pulled out from Matlock Drive and into the motorcycle’s path.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash, and no charges have been filed at this time as investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The identity of the motorcyclist has also not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Both crashes remain under active investigation by KPD crash reconstruction personnel, who are working to determine the exact sequence of events in each incident.
