Knoxville, TN (WOKI / WVLT) – A man from Ohio is facing multiple felony charges after investigators say he attempted to break into a Knoxville bank and a nearby drug store early Monday morning, causing an estimated $20,000 in damage.
According to warrants obtained by WVLT News, Knoxville Police Department officers responded to Mountain Commerce Bank on Kingston Pike around 1 a.m. after reports of a possible break-in attempt.
When officers arrived, bank employees reported finding two smashed windows and a damaged door. Investigators also found blood on the ground beneath the broken entryway.
Employees told police that nothing appeared to have been stolen from the bank. However, significant property damage was discovered throughout the exterior of the building.
According to the warrants, a small boulder had been thrown into the bank, damaging windows and the entrance area. Investigators also reported damage to gutters and the building’s cement footing after a bush was allegedly ripped from the ground. Officials estimated the total damage to the bank at approximately $15,000.
While officers were investigating at Mountain Commerce Bank, the manager of a nearby Walgreens flagged down police and reported similar damage at the store.
According to court records, surveillance video showed a man attempting to pry open the front entrance of the Walgreens at roughly the same time as the bank incident. The suspect allegedly damaged windows and gutters during the attempt, causing an estimated $5,000 in damage.
Investigators later identified the suspect as 25-year-old Daniel Kalinsky of Ashtabula, Ohio, after a wallet believed to belong to him was reportedly found at the scene.
Police said Kalinsky was arrested about an hour after the incidents at a CVS located across the street. Officers initially took him into custody on charges of public intoxication and resisting arrest.
At the time of his arrest, warrants state that Kalinsky had glass fragments embedded in his hands and was heavily bleeding. He was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment before being booked into custody.
Following the investigation, Kalinsky was additionally charged with:
- Two counts of attempted burglary
- Two counts of vandalism
- Public intoxication
- Resisting arrest
Authorities have not reported any stolen property in connection with either incident. The case remains in the court system.
