KPD, Fire, Traffic and EMS Coordinating Responses As Crowds Gather For Fourth of July Events
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — The Knoxville Police Department is utilizing its Real Time Information Center throughout the Independence Day holiday weekend to help monitor activity across the city as large crowds gather to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The center combines personnel from the Knoxville Police Department, Knoxville Fire Department, Traffic Engineering and AMR in a single operations hub, allowing agencies to track incidents and coordinate responses in real time.
KPD officials say the system provides live video access from locations throughout Knoxville, giving first responders a clearer picture of developing situations and reducing reliance solely on information provided through 911 calls.
Capt. Adam Minner of KPD’s Special Services Division described the technology as a modern approach to public safety.
“This is a very forward-facing, forward-thinking type of law enforcement and approach,” Minner said.
According to Minner, officers assigned to holiday events can remain focused on their duties while personnel inside the operations center monitor activity citywide and communicate emerging information directly to officers in the field.
“The officers who are working at the event are monitoring events happening around the city for July 4th,” Minner said. “We’re able to communicate with those officers on site and make sure everyone’s in the same room to provide more resources more efficiently.”
Officials say one of the biggest advantages of the center is improving response times during emergencies.
“It’s just a more timely rapid response and getting eyes on the scene quicker,” Minner said.
Some visitors spending the holiday in downtown Knoxville say they appreciate the balance between public safety and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere. Visitor Hana Scorrar said she has felt comfortable while visiting the city and believes the relatively low-profile police presence reflects a peaceful environment.
KPD is also continuing development of its Drone as First Responder program. Police Chief Paul Noel has previously said the department plans to strategically position approximately a dozen drones throughout Knoxville, allowing officers to quickly gather information and assess incidents before personnel arrive on scene.
Police officials say the technology is intended to enhance situational awareness, improve coordination among agencies and help keep the public safe during large-scale events and beyond.
