NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – A new Tennessee law banning the sale of hemp products containing THCa took effect July 1, prompting a rush of customers to dispensaries and smoke shops across the state ahead of the deadline.
Businesses reported heavy traffic in the final days before the ban went into effect, with customers stocking up on products that will no longer be legal to sell in Tennessee. The law primarily impacts smokable hemp flower and vape products containing THCa.
Other hemp-derived products, including some edibles and beverages, will remain available under the new regulations, but with lower allowable dosage levels.
Employees at several Tennessee retailers said many customers viewed THCa products as an alternative wellness option and were concerned about losing legal access.
Industry leaders also expressed concerns about the economic impact of the ban. Some business owners say they have already moved operations out of Tennessee in anticipation of the law, citing concerns over lost jobs, investment, and tax revenue.
Supporters of the hemp industry say demand for cannabis-related products remains strong across the state and are expected to continue lobbying lawmakers on future hemp and cannabis legislation.
