KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – A key segment of the long-running Alcoa Highway reconstruction project is now expected to take longer than originally planned, raising new questions about the overall timeline for one of East Tennessee’s largest road projects.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) divided the massive effort into seven sections because of its scale and complexity. So far, three of those sections have already been completed:
- Work from north of Hall Road to Tyson Boulevard finished in summer 2022
- The section from north of Maloney Road to Woodson Drive was completed in summer 2023
- The stretch from south of the Little River to north of Maloney Road wrapped up in spring 2026
Up next is a major interchange project between Tyson Boulevard and South Singleton Station. That portion will be completed in two phases, with the first expected by fall 2027 and the second by 2028.
After that, the timeline stretches even further. TDOT now expects the segment between Woodson Drive and Cherokee Trail to be finished by 2030. Crews recently set eight beams for a new bridge in June as part of that progress.
The final phase—from South Singleton Station to south of the Little River—is projected to wrap up in 2037, making the overall project a multi-decade effort.
TDOT officials say the staged approach is necessary to maintain traffic and manage construction safely along the busy corridor connecting Knoxville and Blount County.
