KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — A stretch of roadway in South Knoxville now carries the name of one of the University of Tennessee’s most iconic figures.
New signs have been installed on Topside Road designating the bridge over Alcoa Highway as the Coach John Majors Memorial Bridge. The Tennessee Department of Transportation approved the honorary naming, and City of Knoxville crews installed the signs Monday.
The designation comes after requests from neighbors and community members. Majors lived nearby and remained a beloved presence in the area.
Johnny Majors left a lasting legacy at the University of Tennessee both as a player and a coach. He was an All-American single-wing tailback, known for his versatility—passing, punting, and returning kicks.
As head coach of the Volunteers, Majors won 116 games and led the program to three Southeastern Conference championships. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1987.
City and state leaders say the new bridge signs serve as a lasting tribute to Majors’ impact on Knoxville and college football.
