ROANE COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — A Roane County correction deputy who suffered serious injuries in a crash while transporting an inmate is continuing his recovery at home after being released from the hospital.
Corporal Aaron Tuggle was injured July 3 when a correctional transport vehicle he was driving was involved in a collision on Highway 58 near the Meigs County line. According to family members, Tuggle is now off a ventilator, sitting up, and has been discharged from the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
In an update Thursday, his family said he remains uncomfortable but is glad to be home as he continues recovering from multiple injuries.
The Roane County Sheriff’s Office said Tuggle was transporting an inmate to Chattanooga when the crash happened around 9:30 a.m.
A preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol indicates a 75-year-old driver was turning onto Decatur Highway from Keylon Hollow and failed to yield, striking Tuggle’s vehicle. Authorities said the driver could face charges pending the outcome of the investigation.
Tuggle suffered significant injuries, including a broken sternum, broken ribs, and knee injuries. The sheriff’s office said he is in stable condition and making progress in his recovery.
The inmate being transported was taken to UT Medical Center by ambulance following the crash and was later released.
Tuggle’s cousin, Hannah Haid, said support from the community has been overwhelming since the crash.
“Everything that I’ve gotten is, please tell Tuggle, we love him. We’re praying for him. We miss him,” Haid said.
Family members have also raised more than $2,000 to help cover expenses while Tuggle and his wife, Emily, focus on his recovery.
“He won’t ask for help. Emily won’t ask for help. But I just told them they don’t get a choice this time. This time it’s our turn,” Haid said.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol said there are no new updates beyond the preliminary report. The crash remains under investigation.
