KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Knoxville Crime Laboratory is gaining international recognition after being named one of the top-performing forensic labs in the world.
The lab received the prestigious Maximus Award from Project FORESIGHT, an international benchmarking program that evaluates forensic laboratories based on performance, efficiency, financial management and scientific excellence.
Out of 184 laboratories participating worldwide in the 2024-2025 reporting cycle, only 15 were selected for the honor. The Maximus Award is reserved for laboratories operating at 90% or better of peak efficiency.
The Knoxville facility provides critical forensic services, including DNA analysis, drug testing and toxicology screenings that support investigations across the region.
During the 2024-2025 fiscal year, the lab handled 17,988 requests for forensic testing while completing 19,698 cases. That effort reduced the lab’s backlog by nearly 39%, a key factor in its recognition.
TBI Assistant Director of the Forensic Services Division Mike Lyttle said the award highlights the commitment of the lab’s staff.
“This award is confirmation to the citizens of Tennessee of the TBI Crime Laboratory employees’ dedication to public service, responsible resource management and commitment to excellence,” Lyttle said.
Local prosecutors say the lab’s work plays a vital role in delivering justice. District Attorney Charme Allen called the facility an invaluable asset to the community.
“Having a world-class lab in Knoxville helps us develop stronger cases, hold more offenders accountable and resolve cases in a timely manner,” Allen said.
The recognition comes as lab leaders look to the future, with plans to expand staff and upgrade facilities to maintain and improve performance.
The award was presented at the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors annual symposium in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Officials say the honor not only reflects past success but also pushes the lab to continue improving.
“It validates their commitment toward the work that they do,” Lyttle said. “But we can always strive to be better.”
Project FORESIGHT, established in 2008 and managed by West Virginia University, is considered the industry standard for evaluating forensic lab performance worldwide.
