The National Park Service is asking visitors to avoid entering the water at the Obed Wild and Scenic River following a train derailment in Morgan County.
In a notice issued after the incident, officials said the precaution applies to areas in and around Rock Creek Campground and the Nemo Day Use Area. The warning comes after a Norfolk Southern train carrying ethanol derailed Thursday afternoon near Lansing.
The derailment occurred in a rural part of the county, creating challenges for emergency responders working the scene. Officials estimate that between 15 and 20 train cars left the tracks.
Authorities say the request to stay out of the water is being issued out of an abundance of caution while crews continue to assess the situation and any potential environmental impacts.
According to the Federal Railroad Administration, this is the fifth train derailment reported in Tennessee in 2026.
Visitors are encouraged to follow all posted guidance and avoid affected waterways until further notice.
