GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT)— Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials are announcing temporary closures along Little River Road to allow for essential maintenance work on June 8 and 9.
The closures will occur in two phases. On June 8, the stretch from Townsend Wye to Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area will be closed from 7 a.m. until noon. On June 9, the closure will shift to the section between Metcalf Bottoms and Elkmont Junction during the same hours.
Detours will be in place both days. Visitors traveling on June 8 should use Wears Valley Road between Townsend and Line Springs Road. On June 9, drivers can use Wears Valley Road between Line Springs Road and Pigeon Forge.
Park officials say popular destinations including Elkmont, Metcalf Bottoms, and Cades Cove will remain accessible, although travelers may need to take alternate routes and should expect increased travel times.
Certain larger vehicles will face additional restrictions. Motorhomes, buses, and vans longer than 25 feet, along with vehicles towing trailers, are not permitted on Wear Cove Gap Road near Metcalf Bottoms.
Officials say these temporary closures allow crews to safely complete work such as mowing, ditch cleaning, and shoulder repairs—efforts that improve roadway safety and conditions throughout the park.
