Knox County, TN (WOKI / WVLT) – Knox County’s sheriff-elect is speaking out following a sweeping indictment involving 11 current and former employees of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says the charges stem from a long-running probe that began in 2019, with assistance from the FBI. Investigators allege multiple individuals used a sheriff’s office narcotics unit credit card for personal purchases, including electronics, hunting gear, and home improvement materials.
According to the TBI, the alleged misuse between 2010 and 2018 totaled more than $300,000, along with an additional $30,000 in seized cash that was reportedly spent for personal expenses.
Among those indicted are former Sheriff J.J. Jones and Assistant Chief Deputy David Amburn, both of whom were candidates in the recent Republican primary ultimately won by Brent Gibson.
In a statement released Friday, Gibson acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations, saying, “Actions have consequences, and our citizens deserve honesty, transparency, and integrity from those entrusted to serve them.”
Gibson added that while many involved have a long history of public service, no one is above accountability. He says his administration will prioritize integrity, transparency, and strict ethical standards, and pledged that unethical behavior will not be tolerated moving forward.
The case remains ongoing.
Below is Gibson’s full statement:
As Sheriff-Elect of Knox County, I am aware of the recent indictments involving both current and former employees of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. While I know many of those involved personally and recognize the years of public service they have given to this community, public service can never place anyone above accountability. Actions have consequences, and our citizens deserve honesty, transparency, and integrity from those entrusted to serve them.
These situations are difficult for everyone connected to this agency and this county, but they also serve as a reminder of the importance of principled leadership and ethical standards within law enforcement. The public must be able to trust those who are tasked with keeping them safe.
Moving forward, I can personally assure you that the Knox County Sheriff’s Office will be led with integrity, honesty, and accountability at every level. Under my administration, unethical behavior will not be tolerated, and every employee, regardless of rank or position will be held to the highest professional standards.
The men and women of this agency who serve honorably every single day should know they have my full support, and the people of Knox County should know their Sheriff’s Office is in good hands moving forward. We will continue building an agency rooted in trust, transparency, and leadership that puts the citizens of this county first.
