MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (Story courtesy of WVLT) – The City of Morristown is changing how part of its election system works.
A change in the city’s charter, adopted in 2024 to comply with state law, requires a different structure for municipal elections. Starting this fall, voters will select only who will represent their specific ward, rather than all voters being able to select a candidate for every council seat. There will be no change to voting for at-large city council seats or the city mayor.
As part of the change, the city is reviewing its ward map and redistricting based on current population.
“In the past, size and population balance between the wards really didn’t matter because all voters voted on all council members,” Morristown City Administrator Andrew Ellard said. “Now that each ward-based council seat can only be voted on by that ward’s voters, balance matters.”
Residents can share their thoughts on the proposed redistricting map through May 14. Written comments can be submitted by email to CityClerk@mymorristown.com. Printed forms are also available at the City Center.
City Council will hear the feedback on May 15, then consider and possibly adopt a final map at its May 19 meeting.
