Knoxville, TN (WOKI) – This is National Work Zone Awareness Week.

The timing coincides with the beginning of road construction season with goal to encourage drivers to use extreme caution when traveling through a work zone.
Since January 1, 2024, there have been 328 crashes in work zones in Region 1 which consists of 24 East Tennessee counties.
And since records began being kept in the late 1940s, 113 TDOT workers have died in the line of duty.
113 barrels have been placed along I-640 East in Knox County, just before Exit 1 (Western Avenue), as a memorial.
The Henley Bridge in downtown Knoxville will be lit in Orange on Monday, April 20.
The TDOT Region 1 complex east of downtown Knoxville will be lit in Orange each night this week.
“Wear Orange Day” is Wednesday, April 22.
