KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – As cooler temperatures begin arriving across East Tennessee, Knox Area Rescue Ministries is preparing for its annual effort to help keep local residents warm during the winter months.
KARM’s Coats for the Cold campaign returns this month, giving Knoxville-area residents an opportunity to donate new or gently used coats to people in need throughout the community.
While KARM accepts coat donations year-round, the annual campaign focuses specifically on collecting enough winter clothing to meet increased seasonal demand as temperatures begin to drop.
The coat drive begins Monday, Oct. 19, and runs through Nov. 6. Donations can be dropped off at any KARM Store or participating Prestige Cleaners location.
Organizers are encouraging residents to check closets for coats that are no longer needed and donate items that are clean and in good condition.
Once collected, the coats will be distributed to individuals and families throughout the Knoxville area.
People needing a winter coat can obtain a voucher through participating churches and social service agencies. Those vouchers can then be redeemed for a free coat between Nov. 16 and Dec. 5.
KARM officials say the program helps ensure that adults and children facing financial challenges have access to warm clothing during some of the coldest months of the year.
The annual drive has become a longtime East Tennessee tradition, providing thousands of coats to community members while giving donors a simple way to help neighbors in need before winter arrives.
