KNOXVILLE, TN (WOKI / WVLT) – Tennessee death row inmate Christa Gail Pike has been discharged from the hospital and returned to the prison where she has been housed for more than three decades following the state’s failed execution attempt.
Attorneys representing Pike announced that she has been transferred to the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, Tennessee’s primary correctional facility for female inmates, where she will continue receiving medical care.
In a statement, attorneys with Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee and the Tennessee Office of the Post-Conviction Defender said Pike remains under medical supervision as she continues her recovery.
“Christa Pike was discharged from a local hospital and is now at Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center where she has been housed for more than 30 years,” the attorneys said. “She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances.”
Pike’s hospitalization followed Tennessee’s failed execution attempt on Sept. 30, during which state officials administered two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital before halting the procedure.
The case drew national attention after Pike survived and later regained consciousness. Her attorneys have reported that she experienced serious medical complications but has shown signs of recovery in recent days.
The incident has also triggered significant fallout within Tennessee’s corrections system.
Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent review of the execution process and suspended the state’s remaining scheduled execution for 2026 while investigators examine what occurred.
In addition, Frank Strada, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction, has offered his resignation and is expected to leave the post later this month. State officials have not yet announced an interim commissioner.
Pike remains under a sentence of death as legal proceedings surrounding the failed execution and its aftermath continue.
