KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI) — Brent Gibson is officially taking the oath of office today as Knox County’s new sheriff, marking a leadership transition at one of East Tennessee’s largest law enforcement agencies.
Gibson succeeds Sheriff Tom Spangler, who is leaving office after serving two terms. The swearing-in ceremony is part of Knox County’s installation of newly elected officials at the Tennessee Theatre at 10 a.m.
The former assistant chief deputy won the 2026 election and now assumes responsibility for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, which serves residents across the county and operates the county jail system.
Gibson enters office with decades of law enforcement experience and a background that includes service within the sheriff’s office and involvement in the Knoxville community. He has pledged to continue focusing on public safety, supporting deputies, and maintaining strong relationships between law enforcement and residents.
His swearing-in also marks the end of Sheriff Tom Spangler’s tenure. In a recent farewell message, Spangler thanked Knox County residents for their trust and described serving as sheriff as “the honor of my lifetime.”
The leadership change comes as the Knox County Sheriff’s Office continues its mission of providing law enforcement services, corrections operations, and public safety programs throughout the region.
As he takes office, Gibson becomes the county’s chief law enforcement officer and begins a new chapter for the agency.
