KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WLVT) — Tennessee political leaders are offering condolences and paying tribute to longtime South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham following news of his death.
Graham’s office announced that the Republican senator died Saturday, July 11, 2026, after what was described as a “brief and sudden illness.” He was 71 years old. Graham had served in the U.S. Senate since 2003 and was one of the chamber’s most recognizable voices on national security and foreign policy issues.
Following the announcement, several Tennessee lawmakers shared messages of remembrance on social media.
U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn said the nation had lost a dedicated public servant.
“Last night, our nation lost a dedicated public servant in my friend and colleague, Lindsey Graham. He devoted his life to serving the people of South Carolina and this nation. My prayers are with his family, friends, staff and all who loved him. May he rest in peace.”
U.S. Representative Tim Burchett also expressed sympathy for Graham’s family and loved ones.
“Kelly and I are saddened by Senator Lindsey Graham’s sudden passing. Please join us as we pray for his sister, Darline, and all of his loved ones.”
Representative John Rose reflected on Graham’s public service and willingness to engage on national issues.
“Very sad news. I’ll be praying for Lindsey’s family and the good people of South Carolina in the days ahead. I always appreciated his commitment to America First and his willingness to take tough questions from reporters any time, any where.”
Tennessee Senator Bill Hagerty also released a statement Sunday.
“Chrissy and I are deeply saddened by Senator Lindsey Graham’s untimely passing. Lindsey was a dedicated public servant and a strong voice on many issues, particularly international affairs where his leadership was felt around the world. We join so many others in praying for his family during this difficult time, and we pray that his soul may rest in eternal peace.”
Graham was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002 after serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. During more than two decades in the Senate, he served on several influential committees and most recently chaired the Senate Budget Committee.
His office said the family appreciates prayers and has requested privacy during this difficult time. Additional details regarding funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
