KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI) — Motorists traveling on Alcoa Highway in Knox County should prepare for delays this week as construction crews conduct a series of traffic control operations tied to the ongoing Alcoa Highway improvement project.
Beginning Monday and continuing through Saturday, crews will implement intermittent rolling roadblocks on Alcoa Highway between Woodson Drive and Cherokee Trail. The roadblocks will occur between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day and are expected to last about 20 minutes at a time, allowing traffic to return to normal flow between operations.
The temporary traffic stoppages are needed so crews can safely move equipment and complete rock excavation and clearing work.
Drivers should also expect periodic delays from flagging operations on the northbound Alcoa Highway ramp at Cherokee Trail and along Cherokee Trail between the interchange and Medical Center Way. Those operations will also take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily while crews unload materials and manage truck traffic entering and exiting work zones.
Meanwhile, Woodson Drive remains closed at Alcoa Highway as crews continue work on a new roadway alignment, utility installation, storm drainage improvements, and a future roundabout. The closure is expected to remain in place until construction is completed, currently anticipated on or before July 31.
TDOT advises motorists to expect delays, use caution in work zones, and watch for construction workers and equipment. All construction activities remain weather dependent.
