EAST TENNESSEE (WOKI / WVLT) — The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for much of East Tennessee beginning at 11 a.m. Tuesday and continuing through 9 p.m. Thursday.
Forecasters expect heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees as high temperatures combine with elevated humidity levels.
Emergency officials warn that prolonged exposure to the heat can quickly lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other heat-related illnesses.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
Officials also remind the public to wear lightweight clothing, check on elderly neighbors and family members, and ensure pets have access to shade and water.
People who work outdoors should schedule frequent rest breaks and stay hydrated throughout the day.
Authorities emphasize that children and pets should never be left unattended in parked vehicles, where temperatures can rapidly become life-threatening.
Anyone experiencing signs of a heat-related emergency should be moved to a cool location and 911 should be called immediately.
