JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — A Knoxville woman has died after an ATV crash in Jefferson County Sunday evening, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a reported ATV crash at a home along State Route 92 just after 7 p.m. Sunday.
Investigators said 56-year-old Heather Wheeler, of Knoxville, was driving an ATV down a hill on private property when she lost control and crashed into a utility pole.
Family members transported Wheeler and a passenger from the scene to meet Jefferson County EMS and New Market Fire Rescue at the intersection of Highway 92 and Hickory Hills Road. Both were then taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
The sheriff’s office said Wheeler died from her injuries Monday morning. The passenger was treated and later released from the hospital.
According to investigators, neither Wheeler nor the passenger was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division assisted patrol deputies in investigating the crash.
In a social media post, the sheriff’s office extended its condolences to Wheeler’s family and loved ones.
