MORGAN CO., Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – Authorities say environmental conditions remain stable after last week’s train derailment in Morgan County that led to an ethanol spill, fires, and concerns about contamination in the area near Lancing.
In an update released by Morgan County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and Homeland Security, officials confirmed that ongoing air monitoring has not detected ethanol levels of concern. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), along with Norfolk Southern, has been conducting testing in the area since the derailment.
Officials also reported that drinking water supplies have remained within normal levels and are considered safe. However, residents and visitors may still notice strong odors near the Emory River due to ethanol’s distinct smell, which can linger even when it is not present at harmful levels.
Despite the positive air and water quality results, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has issued a temporary contact advisory for portions of the Emory River impacted by the spill. The advisory urges the public to avoid water contact in affected areas as a precaution.
The specific locations included in the advisory are:
- Morgan County near the Camp Austin Bridge
- Nemo Picnic Area, upstream of the Catoosa Road Bridge
- Emory Heights Road
- Any swimmable locations in close proximity to the derailment site
Officials emphasized that the advisory is temporary and is intended to protect public safety while assessments and cleanup continue.
Morgan County EMA said it is working alongside multiple agencies, including TDEC, EPA, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Norfolk Southern. These groups are coordinating environmental monitoring, public safety measures, response efforts, and oversight of remediation work.
Crews continue to assess environmental impacts and ensure the affected areas are properly restored. Officials say updates will be provided as more information becomes available and conditions continue to improve.
