WARTBURG, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – Portions of the Obed Wild and Scenic River are closed to the public following a recent railroad derailment upstream along the Emory River.
The National Park Service announced the closure began at noon Friday, impacting waters around Rock Creek Campground and the Nemo Day Use Area. Swimming and fishing are both prohibited in the affected areas.
The derailment happened the evening of June 11, raising concerns about possible contamination entering the river system. Officials say it is still unknown whether hazardous materials could travel downstream.
The closure will remain in place while crews assess damage and complete any necessary cleanup efforts to ensure visitor safety.
Park staff have posted notices at impacted locations and will continue to monitor the area for compliance.
Visitors are encouraged to check for updates before heading to the park.
