Oak Ridge, TN (WOKI) – The City of Oak Ridge will begin a major water infrastructure repair project next week that is expected to affect traffic near one of the city’s busiest intersections.
City officials announced that construction will begin Monday, October 12, at the intersections of South Illinois Avenue, Tulsa Road, and ORAU Way.
The project will replace a leaking cast iron water main located beneath South Illinois Avenue. Officials say the aging waterline has required replacement to improve the reliability and long-term performance of the city’s water distribution system.
Construction is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete.
Traffic Changes
Motorists traveling through the area should expect temporary traffic modifications during construction, including:
- Southbound ORAU Way will be closed except for vehicles making a right turn onto South Illinois Avenue.
- Northbound traffic on ORAU Way will remain open up to the bank access entrance.
- Drivers should expect traffic delays and congestion in the construction zone.
City officials are encouraging residents and commuters to seek alternate routes whenever possible to avoid delays during the project.
Improving Water System Reliability
The repair project is part of ongoing efforts by the City of Oak Ridge to maintain and improve critical infrastructure throughout the community.
Officials say replacing the deteriorating section of water line will help reduce the risk of future leaks and service disruptions while improving reliability for customers served by the city’s water system.
The city is asking motorists to use caution in the work zone and remain patient as crews complete the project.
